A good newsletter is a powerful sales tool that allows you to check in with your customers on a regular basis, present purchasing opportunities, and build brand awareness. Use these tips to write an effective newsletter that helps you boost sales.
Don’t try to appeal to everyone. Instead, focus on your target audience. Not everyone is going to buy your product, so make your language specific to target the ones who will. For example, let’s say you’re selling ballpoint pens. While there is a diverse audience that buys ballpoint pens, you still want to focus your efforts on one segment to maximize the sales opportunity. If this specific newsletter is going out at the end of summer, you may want to target your newsletter to parents looking to buy back-to-school supplies for their child. This email is likely going to look a lot more colorful and family-friendly than a newsletter targeting corporate professionals.
Show your audience that you’re an authority on the product or service you’re selling to build trust and brand loyalty. You can do this by highlighting customer testimonials, research your company has conducted, your company’s longevity in the marketplace, quotes and thoughts from subject matter experts, and any other original insights that your readers won’t find anywhere else.
Too many companies stuff as many offers as they can into a newsletter, but these options usually distract customers more than they encourage sales. Don’t include any more than one offer in each newsletter, and make sure that offer is clear and enticing to your audience.
The more time a customer has to think about a purchase, the more time they have to back out. Leverage deadlines and scarcity to encourage your customer to make their purchase immediately. This might look like a “limited time offer” or a “while supplies last” promotion.
A call to action (CTA) is an actionable suggestion that leads your customers to the next step in the sales process. Start with a strong directive like “Click Here” or “Join” to point your customer in the right direction. Your CTA is also a good opportunity to emphasize urgency, but try to keep the tone light and the text simple. Try something like “Click here for our 30% Off Labor Day Weekend Deal”.
Writing the perfect newsletter takes time and practice, but the boost in sales you’ll get will be worth the effort. Try using A/B testing to figure out what tone, format, and language works best for your audience. Once you develop this skill, sales will follow.
